While reading To Kill a Mockingbird and Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands, we spent a lot of time discussing discrimination and hatred within our nation's past. The 1900s saw many advancements in equality, but those were very hard fought victories, and they came at the expense of many lives.

That leads us to our time period and this question:
How prevalent are hate crimes, prejudice and racism in our own society today,
and what can be done about them?

Step 1: Each person in the group selects two articles to preview. After all are done, each person needs to share information from the articles explaining what you found about some or all of the following concepts:
  • to what group was the racism directed?
  • from what group did the racism start?
  • did it result in a crime or violent act?
  • what was the motivation to commit those acts?
  • how could it have been prevented?

Use this document to take notes on the research you find in Step 3:

Step 3: Brainstorm. You are going to respond to these attacks by writing a persuasive essay to make our society more aware of the problems of this particular type of racism. When people know more, they want to act to solve the problem. Use the following guidelines to help in your process:
  • Decide how to approach the topic. These are very emotional issues so you should stay away from attempts at humor.
  • How frequent are the crimes that stem from your type of racism? Check statistics on the internet and record them.
  • What emotional, psychological, and/or personal problems stem from this type of racism?
  • Case history: what examples can you find that show us the extent and depth of the problem?
  • Give us suggestions on what we can do to help prevent this type of racism.

Step 4: Write your persuasive essay. Use the attached document to help you with your preplanning/prewriting before you begin. Make sure you follow the format provided in terms of content in specific areas. Overall, start to think about how to emotionally appeal to your reader. How can you show them the horror of this type of racism? How serious and frequent are the attacks? What strategies can be used to prevent this type of racism?
